The Port Authority collaborates with the IES Chan do Monte sustainability workshops
The Port Authority of Marín has moved part of its exhibition, “The Marín Fleet for a Clean Sea,” to the IES Chan do Monte school to collaborate with the Sustainability Workshops currently being held at the educational center. Students from Chan do Monte in Marín visited the Port this year to learn about the different selective waste collection systems implemented by the Port Authority. Guided by the Port's Safety and Sustainability Officer, they were able to delve into environmental aspects related to ship waste on the one hand, and the sorting, removal, and reuse of waste from various port activities on the other.
The exhibition currently on display at Chan do Monte is a summary of the collaborative work carried out between the Marín fishing fleet and the Port Authority to collect, separate, and repurpose different types of waste found on the Galician coast and seabed. The environmental and educational project “The Marín Fleet for a Clean Sea” aims to raise awareness of the waste removal and recycling projects carried out by the Port Authority on the coasts and seabeds of the main fishing grounds used by the Marín fleet. These projects have been underway for years. Among the most significant are “Nothing Overboard,” implemented between 2009 and 2010, and “PESCAL” (Sustainable Fishing in Clean Fishing Grounds), which began in 2012. The exhibition has already visited other schools this year, such as the CEIP Isidora Riestra in Poio and the CEIP Carballal in Marín.
The Port Authority has been implementing various sustainable environmental management programs for several years. Among them, the fishing vessels that participated in the "Nothing Overboard" or PESCAL (Sustainable Fishing in Clean Fishing Grounds) projects continue to remove waste from the sea and deposit it at authorized collection points. This waste includes items such as plastics, cans, net fragments, tires, clothing scraps, wood, etc. The Port Authority continues this activity to contribute to cleaning the seas by participating in the ML-Style and RepescaPlas 2 projects.
