The Port Authority collected over 1,000 tons of waste in 2019.
The various systems implemented at the Port of Marín for the selective collection and reuse of waste by the Port Authority, refrigerated facilities, and export departments, among others, resulted in the removal of 1,056,652 kilos of waste during 2019. The consolidation of selective collection at the port by the Port Authority and the port services company Cantodarea, along with the increasing awareness of users, facilitates the management of different types of waste. Thus, once municipal solid waste and similar waste were discarded, the remaining 76% was recyclable during the past year because it was separated at the source. Waste management systems have been extended to an increasing number of facilities throughout the port community in recent years. As a result, 4,970,910 kilos have been selectively removed since 2013. The Port of Marín has become a benchmark in the environmental management of waste related to maritime and port activities. The largest volume of waste separated at the source during 2019 corresponded to paper and cardboard, with 345 tons, followed by plastics with 255 tons. Other waste materials included remnants of nets, mooring nets, wood, polystyrene, and glass. The Port Authority has been implementing various sustainable environmental management programs for years. Among them, the fishing vessels that participated in the "Nothing Overboard" or PESCAL (Sustainable Fishing in Clean Fishing Grounds) projects continue to remove marine litter from the sea, characterize it, and transport it to a compactor. This litter includes items such as plastics, cans, remnants of nets, tires, clothing scraps, wood, etc. The Port Authority, together with Opromar and the company Casercan, continues this activity to contribute to cleaning the seas and participates in projects such as ML Style and Repesca Plas for the characterization and valorization of marine debris. Recently, the Port's Head of Safety and Sustainability, Benito Calviño, participated with the other project partners in a meeting on the island of El Hierro to present the conclusions of the Repesca Plas 2 studies and begin the new phase of the project: Repesca Plas 3.
