The Port Authority presents its experience in the circular management of fishing nets and gear in Vigo
The Port of Marín, through Benito Calviño, Head of the Sustainability Division of the Port Authority, presented yesterday at the Redeiras building in Vigo the port's extensive experience in the circular management of waste, particularly fishing gear and equipment. This presentation took place within the framework of the PESCRAP project, supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and developed in collaboration with AIMPLAS (Technological Institute of Plastics), the Zero Waste Association, and the Post-Growth Innovation Lab of the University of Vigo, an international and interdisciplinary group with the objective of researching sustainable development pathways. The project aims to establish the technical, economic, and organizational foundations for the creation of a national Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system specifically for fishing and aquaculture gear and equipment at the end of their useful life. The day unfolded through two roundtable discussions. Specifically, the Port of Marín participated in the roundtable “Local Stakeholders and Marine Ecosystem Governance,” alongside representatives from the Spanish Federation of Fishermen's Associations, Fundamar, and Cetmar. The Port Authority explained its long history as a pioneering port in the selective collection, recycling, and reuse of waste.
