The Port Authority of Marín conducts a simulated collision and evacuation of a passenger vessel in the estuary.
This morning, the Port Authority of Marín tested its Internal Emergency Plan by conducting a simulated collision of a passenger vessel in the estuary, in waters near Tambo Island. The drill included the evacuation of an injured person. The Galician Coast Guard participated in the drill with the Pesca 1 helicopter, the Irmáns García Nodal rescue vessel and its auxiliary fast rescue boat, the Mar de Galicia patrol boat, the 112 Emergency Service of Galicia, the Vigo Maritime Authority, the Vigo Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, the Salvamar Mirach based in Cangas, and the Port Authority, as well as the Mar de Ons shipping company with the Mar Sálvora vessel, Amare Marín with two tugboats, the pilotage service, and the State security forces, specifically the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard and the Coast Guard Service. The drill simulated a collision between a passenger ferry and an object located in the water half a mile south of the Tenlo Chico lighthouse, on Tambo Island. Among the 25 simulated passengers, two are injured: one with minor injuries requiring evacuation by stretcher at sea, and another requiring air evacuation. The collision has caused a breach in the vessel, and given the risk of sinking, measures must be taken to protect the remaining 23 passengers with the assistance of a tugboat and bilge pumps. The objective of these types of drills is to minimize the effects of an emergency, especially with regard to saving lives, minimizing environmental impacts, and maintaining the operations of vessels, facilities, equipment, and other resources working within the port area or its waters. The port's Internal Emergency and Self-Protection Plan is fundamental for the coordinated and effective response of all agencies involved in an incident of this nature.
