The Port Authority collected nearly 1,000 tons of waste in 2018.
The various systems implemented at the Port of Marín for the selective collection and reuse of waste by the Port Authority, refrigerated facilities, and export departments, among others, resulted in the removal of 816 tons of waste during 2018. The consolidation of selective collection at the port by the Port Authority and the port services company Cantodarea, along with the increasing awareness of users, facilitates the management of different types of waste. Thus, once municipal solid waste and similar waste were discarded, the remaining 67% was recyclable during the past year because it was separated at the source. Waste management systems have been extended to an increasing number of facilities throughout the port community in recent years. As a result, nearly 4,000 tons have been selectively removed since 2013. The Port of Marín has become a benchmark in the environmental management of waste related to maritime and port activities. The largest volume of waste separated at the source during 2018 was paper and cardboard, with 244 tons, followed by fishing net remnants, with 133 tons. The remaining waste material subject to selective collection consists mainly of wood, plastics, fishing nets, and glass, among other materials. The Port Authority has been implementing various sustainable environmental management programs for years. Among these, the fishing vessels that participated in the "Nothing Overboard" and PESCAL (Sustainable Fishing in Clean Fishing Grounds) projects continue to remove waste from the sea and deposit it at authorized collection points. This waste includes items such as plastics, cans, fishing net remnants, tires, clothing scraps, wood, and so on. Although the project has officially ended, the Port Authority, along with Opromar and the company Casercan, continues this activity to contribute to cleaning the seas.
