The Port of Marín maintained its cargo traffic above two million tons in 2022
The Port of Marín maintained its forecast of exceeding two million tons of cargo traffic in 2022 and experienced increases in practically all categories. Furthermore, it maintained a balanced distribution of cargo between solid bulk, which totaled 1,039,591 tons and represents 50% of port traffic, and general cargo, which reached 1,037,712 tons, representing a similar percentage of the total cargo handled during the year. The overall result at the end of 2022 stood at 2,117,919 tons, just 60,000 tons less than in 2021. By cargo category, the increase in solid bulk stands out once again, rising by 8.57%. This was aided by shipments of wood chips and grains and flours, which remain among the main commodities handled by Marín, a logistics hub for receiving and distributing goods to farms and livestock operations throughout Galicia. General cargo in containers also saw an increase of 2.63%, with notable rises in frozen and chilled fish, iron and steel products, and appliances, tools, and machinery. Meanwhile, in the general cargo sector, the production shutdown at the Ence factory, forced by the months of drought experienced this year, had a noticeable impact. This resulted in 176,000 fewer tons of paper pulp being shipped compared to the previous year, although other cargoes, such as wind energy products and timber and cork, saw increases. As for fresh fish, the upward trend of recent years continues, and this chapter again registers a notable increase with 14.17% more sales volume at the fish market and nearly 4% higher first sale value.
