The Port Authority calls an extraordinary Board meeting to consider joining the Ence appeal
The Port Authority will hold an extraordinary Board meeting this Thursday, the 9th, with a single item on the agenda: the situation created by the ruling that annulled the extension of Ence's concession in Lourizán and the possibility of joining the legal proceedings. The meeting was called at the request of the Board representatives from the Chambers of Commerce, Industry, and Navigation of Pontevedra, Vigo, and Vilagarcía, and the representative of business organizations. In their written request for the extraordinary meeting, both cite the “catastrophic economic and social consequences that the definitive cessation of the company's activity would entail, due to the loss of jobs and one of the main sources of income for the rural population of Galicia.” As the governing body of the Port Authority, the Board of Directors, chaired by Suárez Costa, will debate this Thursday the Port's participation in the administrative litigation proceedings currently before the National Court and the filing of an appeal to the Supreme Court. Following the National Court's ruling this summer, Suárez Costa expressed his "utmost concern" as president regarding the consequences that the potential closure of Ence would have for the Port of Marín. Ence's pulp traffic involves more than 100 ships per year and 120 truck movements per ship. Furthermore, the port boasts a unique infrastructure in Spain dedicated to this activity: the Covered Terminal (AWT), which is operated by Grupo Nogar, another major employer within the port area. For the Port of Marín, "it is, without a doubt, a strategic commodity, and if a potential closure leads to the loss of this traffic, many other things will be at stake, both directly and indirectly," the president stated. Ence exports virtually all of its production from the Lourizán factory through the Port of Marín. With an average of 400,000 tons per year, "we're talking about 19% of total port traffic and up to 60% of conventional general cargo traffic (non-containerized)." "The raison d'être of a port of general interest is the import and export of products for the industry located in its hinterland or area of influence," added the president.
