Suárez Costa informs the Board of Directors of the 2023 management balance
In its first session of the year, the Port Authority Administration Council, as the highest collective decision-making body in the port, received information on the balance of port management for the year 2023, by its president Jose Benito Suárez Costa.
The 2023 fiscal year ended with the movement of 2,120,417 tons of merchandise, practically maintaining the figures of the previous fiscal year, which was 2,117. 937 tons.
Suárez Costa explained to the councilors that the maintenance of two regular maritime services, the consolidation of agri-food grain traffic and the loyalty of the movement of strategic markets such as paper pulp, steel products or frozen fish, allowed the port to remain above two million tons in a complex economic context for international trade of markets. “Despite the fact that the average traffic of the state port system reduced by 3.3% in 2023, Marín managed to maintain itself, or call it an important achievement,” the president deceived.
The balance highlights the 13.7% growth in conventional (non-containerized) general marketing, thanks to the recovery of paper pulp traffic that in 2022 was reduced due to the temporary cessation of activity at the Ence factory as a consequence of a persistent dry situation. There is also a notable increase in cereals and soybeans, with a 13.55% increase, or wheat with a 38% increase.
Regarding marketing distribution in 2023, Porto de Marín achieved a more balanced exercise between general marketing (50.74% of total traffic) and solid grains.
The other two most notable data from the year's balance is the increase in rail movement for traffic both entering and leaving the port area, which reached 383,688 tons in 2023. “This once again places Porto de Marín as a leader in port intermodality with 18% of railway participation in port operations,” said Jose Benito Suárez Costa.
Record in xaneiro
The president of the Port Authority also referred to data from the beginning of 2024, which showed a monthly movement of over 300,000 tons, mainly motivated by the important unloadings of solid grains that occurred this month, both agri-food and wood.
Extension of concession term
Among other matters, the Board of Directors approved the eight-year extension of the concession term for a multipurpose container terminal whose concessionaire is Pérez Torres Marítima, the terms and conditions established by the current Portos Law.
