Suárez Costa visits the Gefico plant, a key player in the shipbuilding industry
As part of the Port of Marín’s ongoing engagement with Galicia’s key maritime industries and import-export operators, the Port Authority President visited the Gefico Enterprise facilities in A Coruña. The visit aimed to provide insight into the processes carried out by the company, which specializes in equipment for maritime auxiliary operations.
With a history spanning over 40 years, Gefico is the only maritime auxiliary company in the world that develops and manufactures desalination and water treatment solutions using three distinct technologies: reverse osmosis, thermal evaporation, and mechanical vapor compression evaporation. Suárez Costa observed these processes firsthand during the visit, accompanied by Jose Manuel Iglesias Vilas, President of the Cetus Group (Gefico’s parent company), and Marta Herva Iglesias, General Manager of Gefico.
Gefico operates in both the shipbuilding and offshore sectors and maintains a well-established relationship with the Port of Marín, serving as a regular supplier of water treatment equipment to shipyards such as Nodosa. Furthermore, the technology developed by the company enables it to provide effluent treatment services to businesses in the frozen seafood and canning industries.
Suárez Costa highlighted the importance of R&D in positioning companies like Gefico at the global forefront. He also emphasized the company's ties to the education sector—specifically its close relationship with the University of A Coruña—noted by the participation of Álvaro Baaliña Insua, a professor at the UDC’s School of Nautical and Marine Engineering and a technical advisor to Gefico.
It is also worth noting that Iglesias Vilas holds the position of president of the Galicia Wood Cluster—representing Galopín, another company within the Cetus Group—so the visit also served to strengthen ties with an organization with which the Port of Marín maintains a close relationship, given that the port serves as a strategic hub for the import and export of wood, in both log and panel form.
