Puertos del Estado releases the 2025 Statistical Yearbook featuring comprehensive data on the state port system
• The year 2025 closed with 556.2 million tonnes of cargo handled by Spanish ports, representing a 0.3% decrease compared to 2024.
• The document also details the technical characteristics of the ports, providing a description of the available port infrastructure and capacity.
Puertos del Estado has published the 2025 Statistical Yearbook for the State-Owned Port System, containing comprehensive information on Spanish ports. Additionally, the 1962–2025 Annual Data Dashboard has been updated, enabling interactive access to all port traffic data and facilitating comparative analysis.
The 2025 Statistical Yearbook compiles recorded data on cargo, container, vessel, and passenger traffic across the 28 Port Authorities that make up the system of general interest, alongside technical specifications for the ports.
The definitive 2025 figures included in the Yearbook confirm that the year ended with 556.2 million tonnes of cargo handled—a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to 2024—during a year marked by global geopolitical and economic instability.
Regarding total passenger numbers, a new record was set. In 2025, 4% more passengers passed through our ports than in 2024, reaching a total of 42.49 million; this once again highlights the importance of the state port system in ensuring connectivity and territorial cohesion. Regarding the national port infrastructure, the 46 ports of general interest offer nearly 395,000 linear meters of quays, almost 100 million square meters of land and storage areas, and 2,145 aids to navigation managed by Port Authorities—including 204 lighthouses and major lights—among other figures.
The figures in this document confirm that maritime freight transport remains fundamental to trade in Spain. Its advantages over other modes include lower unit costs for long-distance transport, the ability to move large volumes, and the fact that it is one of the safest and least polluting options. Approximately 71% of imports and 52% of exports in Spain are transported by sea, according to data from the AEAT.
