The Minister of the Sea, Marta Villaverde, presented the Lérez River dredging project this morning to the presidents of the port authorities of the province of Pontevedra. This is the largest dredging project in the regional port system and is currently undergoing environmental review. Villaverde chaired the coordination meeting of the presidents of the ports of Marín, Vilagarcía, and Vigo, and the president of Portos de Galicia (Ports of Galicia). They also discussed in detail the Ministry for Ecological Transition's decision to validate points B, E8, and D for all dredging projects along the Pontevedra coastline, both those promoted by Portos de Galicia and those by the Port Authorities under the State Ports Authority. At the meeting, Villaverde and the presidents of the Galician ports emphasized the technical and scientific nature of the commission led by CEDEX, which also included technicians from the Port Authorities of Marín and Ría de Pontevedra, Vigo, Vilagarcía, State Ports, and Portos de Galicia, to prepare the study of alternative disposal sites for the southern coast of the region. The representatives of the port administrations stressed the importance of respecting the aggregate disposal sites established by the Ministry to unblock the pending port works. Likewise, during the meeting, it was highlighted that the CEDEX report also states that the disposals carried out by the State Port Authorities and Portos de Galicia over two decades at point E8 outside Sálvora “had no impact” on the environment and that the dynamics of marine currents did not displace the deposited material towards the interior of the Arousa estuary. In this regard, the Xunta and Port Authorities emphasized their commitment to preserving the productive and environmental wealth of the estuaries, which, they agreed, is guaranteed by the technical criteria on the discharge points and the environmental measures contemplated in the project in the specific case of the dredging of the Lérez.
